Power outage affects boy’s ability to survive

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

NORWALK – Since early Sunday morning, when her Ridgefield home went dark from the force of Tropical Storm Irene, Laura Wax has come to rely on the electrical outlets at the local fire department.

There, she has been charging the batteries for the medical equipment that keeps her 12-year-old son alive.

“Electricity is a huge part of his everyday life,” said Wax, a sixth-grade language arts teacher at West Rocks Middle School.

The boy, Cubby, who celebrated his birthday as the storm raged through his town, lives with the most severe form of spinal muscular atrophy. It impacts his ability to breathe, swallow, walk and talk. Yet, with a system of sophisticated machines, Cubby is able to survive.

“When we have a situation like this,” Wax said, “it becomes a real issue.”

That was her first thought when the power failed around 6 a.m. Sunday, she said. Wax immediately switched her son’s ventilator, feeding machine and suction machine – which helps clear his throat — to their battery-powered functions.

After about 10 hours, however, they would lose their charge.

And while the family used to have a generator, it recently broke down.

So on Sunday, as the storm continued its ferocious path, Wax paid a visit to the Ridgefield Fire Department: A beacon of electrical power in a blacked-out town.

“We have an incredible relationship with the community, and we didn’t even have to ask,” she said. “They have welcomed us.”

About twice a day, the mother has traveled to Catoonah Street with drained batteries and brought them home re-energized.

“She proceeds every day like a thoughtful mother,” said Lynne Moore, the principal of West Rocks Middle School where Wax must also prepare to return to work soon.

“Over the course of Cubby’s fight with spinal muscular atrophy, she has been totally dedicated and supportive,” Moore said. “She has never – at least visibly – given the impression that it’s been too much.”

Rather, Moore described Wax as empathetic and strong, demonstrating the same uncanny warmth with her students as she does with her son.

“All that love and patience that is bestowed on Cubby, she bestows on her students,” said Moore.

The school has been generous, as well.

Over the past 10 years, during numerous fundraising campaigns, West Rocks has yielded about ,000 to find a cure for the neuromuscular disease.

“Cubby is incorporated into the West Rocks family,” Moore said.

According to the SMA Foundation, the boy is among an estimated 9,000 people in the United States living with the disease.

Wax called her son “a trooper,” especially given the gloomy circumstances of the past several days. Cubby has busied himself by reading, and while the storm swept through town on his birthday, the family decorated cupcakes.

“We’re trying to keep him involved,” Wax said.

Yet in Ridgefield, where Connecticut Light & Power initially reported a 100-percent blackout, it could be another week before electricity is restored.

“If this lasts a couple more days,” Wax said, “I may have to evacuate him.”

good snacks for diabetics

good snacks for diabetics

Are you diabetic and in need of finding good snacks for diabetics? For many people who are diabetic or know someone who are diabetic it almost seems like there isn’t any good snacks for diabetics because we all think of diabetics as not being able to eat anything good but that is far from the truth. There are good snacks for diabetics out there.

A few good snacks for diabetics are peanut butter crackers, peanuts, popcorn, pickles, cottage cheese, pretzels and fresh fruit when eaten in moderation to name a few.

When you become a diabetic you must not only watch the amount of sugar you intake but also your weight and a good way to do that is by watching what you eat as well. Learning what kinds of foods have a high amount of carbohydrates and sugars will help you to not only maintain your diabetes but also help you safely lose weight.

Just because you are a diabetic doesn’t mean that you have to quit snacking you just may have to snack in moderation. Being diabetic doesn’t mean that you have to quit eating good snacks just make sure that you know which snacks are good for you and eat them in moderation instead of finding yourself sitting down and eating a whole bag of chips all at once you can sit down and eat a bag of no butter popcorn, or a handful or peanuts and pretzels.

Good snacks for diabetics can even be found on the shelf of your local grocery store because most grocery stores have a whole aisle of foods dedicated just to diabetics and how they have no sugar added to them which makes them good for diabetics to eat. Most snacks for diabetics are good, healthy and hard to tell the difference between them and the ones with sugar.
