Receiving Life

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

I'll tell you something very deep.

We learn that Yom Kippur is Yom KePurim- a day a little bit like Purim. Ah- but it doesn't make it.

On Purim I'm standing before G-d and I realize I've made so many mistakes, but on Purim it's something else.

I realize that all my mistakes came because I didn't receive life properly.

On Yom Kippur we stand before G-d and ask him for forgiveness. On Purim I'm not asking for forgiveness.

Imagine I love this girl very much and I hurt her feelings. Then I meet her after a few years, and for three days we discuss how I hurt her, how she hurt me.

Let me ask, how does this sound to you? Very unbelievably stupid. What is there to talk about?

When I love somebody very much I'm just so glad to see them! Who cares what you did yesterday?

Yom Kippur is very high but I'm still talking about what I did yesterday.

On Purim I am so close to G-d, the inside of my inside of my inside and I cannot talk about the details.

On Purim I'm receiving life, and I know I just love you so much, for no reason.

-Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach

My friends, my father would often say that it's easier to fast and feel remorse on Yom Kippur than it is to feel unabashed, unbridled joy on Purim.

I often wonder why that is.

Why are we so ready to jump into the depth of our own sorrow at any moment, but hesitate and hold back when it comes to feeling pure happiness?

Tomorrow we will be celebrating Purim, the Holiday where we acknowledge that life is incredible and full of the craziest and most unexpected miracles. I pray that we can all just jump in, with no hesitation, judgement or suspicion. It's clear how transformative this could be if we could only allow ourselves that luxury.

I believe and see that all of humanity is ready to make this switch. We're ready to be happy, to love and to be free. The only thing that stands in our way is our own opinion. We need to open our hearts and minds and, once and for all, allow the light of our own souls to shine.

I'm honored to announce that as a part of our own quest to receive life, we're are now officially collaborating with the Odyssey Network on several projects. My team and I are very excited and inspired to be connected with such a wonderful organization.

Here is a statement from the incredible Nick Stuart, President and CEO of the Odyssey Network.

"Odyssey is the largest Interfaith organization in America dedicated to building bridges of understanding between people of faith and goodwill through media. We make documentaries and TV movies alongside daily short form feature videos . Our last documentary "Serving Life" which I Exec Produced with Forest Whitaker, went out on the Oprah Winfrey Network and received one of the top marks that "Entertainment Weekly" gave to a documentary last year. Odyssey Networks is working with Neshama developing two documentary ideas. Neshama and the Gospel choir attracted our attention for putting Interfaith into action in an inspiring way that reaches to the heart of worship and spirituality in a way we had never come across before. Apart from the documentaries, we are working with them for our mobile channel and app "Call on Faith" that appears on IPhone, Android and Blackberry app stores and is featured on the Sprint Network mobile packages as the Faith and Inspiration channel, and on Barnes and Noble's Nook e Reader."

We will be filming a rehearsal (with my full band and the Gospel Choir) for Odyssey on the evening of March 19. We are honored to invite a limited number of friends to attend, free of charge, to be a part of this recorded experience. If you're interested in being on the guest list for this exclusive event, please contact my Executive Assistant, Ruth Caraballo at ruthdcaraballo@gmail.com.

My 8th recording, Every Little Soul Must Shine, (commissioned by the PJ Library) is my first Lullaby recording, created and sung in honor of all of our little ones. It was released in December and I'm thrilled to share that it is bringing peace and great nights of sleep to children worldwide. Please click here to get a free download from this recording, a new version or my father's classic lullaby B'shaim Hashem. When I sang with my father as a teenager, this was my big solo. When I started my career, sadly without him by my side, this song was almost too painful to perform. Now, after almost 18 years, I feel a new surge of life and joy in this song- especially when I sing it to my sons, Rafael and Micah. Please let me know what you think of this new arrangement. I pray it brings something unique and special to all of you as well.

My dear friends in all corners of this beautiful world, I'm sending you love and blessings today and everyday. May we experience joy, courage and faith on Purim and allow ourselves to fully receive life, with no apologies, in a new way. I believe in all of us and in our capacity for greatness. May we find the way to believe in each other and to just be happy- together.

Love,
Neshama

Rep. Cafero to seek another term in state house

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

NORWALK – Saying “there is still unfinished work to do on behalf of the voters and taxpayers” House Republican Leader Lawrence F. Cafero of Norwalk announced Sunday he will be seeking relection.

“I have been honored throughout my career in public life to serve all my constituents,” said Cafero in a statement released to The Hour Sunday. “While I believe we have accomplished much, there is still a lot of work to do for all the people of Norwalk and New Canaan, whether it is protecting their pocketbooks, delivering quality education for their kids or making sure our streets and playgrounds are safe and secure.”

Since 2007 Cafero has led the Republican caucus after serving for five terms as Deputy Leader. Cafero was first elected in 1992.

“If I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to continue to serve, I know we can achieve great things,” said Cafero in the statement. “I also look forward to working with some new constituents in New Canaan.” A portion of New Canaan was included in the 142nd District during the reapportionment process.

Cafero is a former Norwalk Board of Education chairman, and continues in the capacity of Expulsion Hearing Officer for the city’s schools. Cafero is a lifelong resident of Norwalk where he and his wife Barbara have raised their three children.

He is a graduate of Norwalk High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and earned his J.D. from Western New England College School of Law. He is a partner with the law firm of Brown, Rudnick, of Hartford.

News pioneer Jay McMullen dies in Conn. at 90

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

GREENWICH (AP) — Jay McMullen, an investigative reporter who was among the first to use hidden cameras and often went undercover to produce TV and radio documentaries, has died in Connecticut. He was 90.

His family says the former CBS Reports writer, reporter, producer and director died of natural causes early Saturday in Greenwich Woods Hospice.

One of McMullen’s documentaries was “Biography of a Bookie Joint,” which he narrated with Walter Cronkite. The 1961 CBS Reports recorded Boston police officers and other gamblers entering and leaving a betting parlor disguised as a key store.

McMullen went undercover to place bets and get footage from the inside using a camera inside a lunch box. Police officers were demoted and their chief later resigned.

McMullen is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Funeral arrangements have not been set.

‘February House’ unbelievable

Friday, March 9th, 2012

“Unbelievable,” said a theatergoer exiting the opening night of “February House.” From her tone of voice, she meant it as a compliment.

The promising yet disappointing new musical at Long Wharf, though based on fact, is dramatically unconvincing. Life, no matter how compelling, needs to be transmuted into art if it’s to reach the heart as well as the head.

Co-produced with New York’s Public Theater, where it opens in May, “February House” is not boring yet lies there for its two-and-a-half hour running time. Substituting familiarity for engagement, it doesn’t probe.

The fascinating facts are detailed in Sherrill Tippins’ book of the same name, the musical’s inspiration. In 1940, poet W. H. Aden, composer Benjamin Britten, novelist Carson McCullers, ecdysiast Gypsy Rose Lee and others lived a tempestuous year in a Brooklyn boarding house under the guidance and encouragement of George Davis, recently sacked from his job as a Harper’s Magazine editor.

Alliances were made and broken, alcohol imbibed and work created, amid the mundane concerns of rent, bedbugs, heat and mold. Even great or about to be great artists have domestic difficulties.

From the outline, you’d think this would be an evening rife with passion and excitement, filtered through comments on the role of the arts in society. You’d be wrong. What actually happens on the Long Wharf stage is wrapped in a plotless book by librettist Seth Bockley and repetitive music by Gabriel Kahane. Only Kahane’s clever lyrics add flavor to hothouse characters searching to establish a community of artists.

Despite mostly homosexual couplings, the evening is more campy than erotic. Although sympathetic to underlying passions, the creators feed into stereotypical beliefs about effete artistic types flaunting society’s mores. Lacking is a thematic connection to how their sexuality did or not impinge on their work.

Oh, yes, there’s a bit about the politics, such as Auden’s “Say this city has ten million souls / Some are living in mansions, some are living in holes.” Yet he’s chastised for not directly participating in the war being fought in his native Britain.

More central are the personal squabbles that circle about the inhabitants. One story involves McCullers’ struggles to reconcile returning to her husband, Reeves, vs. her yearning for Erika Mann (writer Thomas Mann’s daughter and Auden’s marriage-of-convenience lesbian wife). Another is the fraught relationship between Auden and his young lover, rising poet Chester Kallman. Then there’s Auden’s professional involvement with Britten and his boyfriend, tenor Peter Pears, in writing a new opera, “Paul Bunyan.”

Behind all this love affair with words lurks simple lust. We’re not, however, invested enough in the characters to care or even be titillated.

Davis McCallum’s direction clarifies the script’s slackness but not its characters. Most admirable is Erik Lochtefeld’s Auden, a man whose conflicting raptures embody the evening’s split between public precision and private passion. Also effective are A. J. Shively’s Kallman, Ken Clark’s Reeves McCullers, Stephanie Hayes’ Mann and Kacie Sheik’s Gypsy. Julian Fleisher ‘s Davis, Stanley Bahorek’s Britten and Ken Barnett’s Pears are more cartoonish, while Kristen Sieh’s Carson McCullers is nigh indecipherable.

Andy Boroson and Andy Stack work hard at, respectively, piano and guitar/banjo. But it will take a lot more sweat and tears to reach, as McCullers wrote, the “thousand illuminations” this material deserves.

“February House” is at Long Wharf Theater, 222 Sargent Drive, New Haven, through March 18. Call (203) 787-4282 or visit longwharf.org

FCIAC Hockey Championship — Ridgefield Tigers take title

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

STAMFORD — It was one the rare times in sports where the game lived up to its hype.

All season long the debate rang out as to whether Darien or Ridgefield was the best hockey team in the FCIAC and on Saturday night the Tigers made their case in one of the best championship games in recent memory.

Ridgefield’s Sean Wilkinson scored with 10:38 left in the game to give the Tigers a 3-2 win over the Blue Wave and clinch the FCIAC championship at the Terry Conners Rink.

After a furious second period which ended with the two teams deadlocked at two, the third period got off to a conservative start as neither team wanted to make the error which could lead to the tie-breaking score. Finally, Tim Kelly found Chris Morrow with a lead pass as he was streaking down the right wing. The junior winger broke in on goal from the boards and sent a wrist-shot on goal, but it was blocked Darien goaltender Max Rothstein (22 saves). The rebound, however, slid onto the blade of Wilkinson’s stick and he re-directed it in.

The Tigers fell back into a defensive posture with their goalie Nathan Gliedman turning aside 12 shots in the final frame. The senior made 25 saves in the game as Ridgefield avenged a 4-2 regular season loss to Darien. The game was played on a very high level and there was not one penalty called on either team.

Ridgefield coach Sean Gallagher called it one the best games that he has ever been involved in.

“They’re a great team,” said Gallagher. “I’m glad we matched up with them. No one lost here tonight. This was a great game. We’d score and they’d score. I told my teams at the beginning of the third period, if we score again just take care of the defense.”

Wilkinson was named the MVP of the FCIAC championship tournament.

Morrow chipped a goal to go along with his assist and Kelly finished the game with two assists. Ridgefield will now get ready for the start of the CIAC tournament. They will take the ice next on Wednesday and they will play the winner of the Trinity Catholic and Windsor-Farmington-Avon game.

“Ever since we beat St. Joe’s, we’ve been thinking about this night,” said Wilkinson. “For my senior year, my last year here, it’s unreal to win it now. It’s just a great way to go out of the FCIAC. We obviously have states now, but there’s something about competing in the FCIAC and there is something special about winning.”

Darien coach Chris Gerwig was proud of his team, as well. They were missing one of their best players (Hank Glick) coming into the game and lost another star (Trent Bergin) during the game but his team continued to compete against their top rival.

“I’m at a loss for words because it’s a tough loss, but at the same time — and I never thought I’d say this — but I’m pleased with the way we played,” said Gerwig. “You can’t play any better than we did but you have to give those guys over there credit because they’re a great hockey team.

Darien will now face a familiar foe in New Canaan in the opening round of the state tournament. The two teams have already played three times this year with the Blue Wave winning two, including their last tilt in the semifinals of this tournament.

The two teams had played a tentative first period which produced no scoring. The Tigers held the advantage as the forced Rothstein to make 11 saves in the period but the Blue Wave netminder was up to the task.

But all that changed early in the second period when the Tigers broke out of their zone on the two on one breakaway. Kelly brought the puck up the right wing and slid the pass at the last minute to Morrow who stuffed it under Rothstein’s pad after only 30 second has expired in the middle period for a 1-0 lead.

Darien answered just over a minute later with the tying score. Nick Bruno sent a soft shot on goal from the right face-off circle which handcuffed Gliedman.

The Tigers grabbed the lead again six minutes later on an unassisted tally by John Christenson. The junior sent a laser from the high slot which lit the lamp with 5:34 remaining before the second intermission.

Darien did not waste any time in scoring the game-tying goal just 10 second later. Owen Koorbush received a pass from Robert Juterbock on right side of the cage and pitch forked a backhand into the mesh to tie the game.

Prayer at night, and how it can help you!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012
Prayer at night is very important  In the Jewish tradition we say the Shma Yisrael along with other Psalms and verses from the Torah.  Many of these deal with the Angels that come to protect us while we sleep, and may the Presence of God be with us at all times.
I also add a prayer of my own to promote health and to counteract all the negativity that I encounter during the day.  This prayer I say in English.  Here is the prayer.
HaRachaman, Lord of the Universe, Bring me only positive events and positive news.
Bring me perfect health, every cell, tissue, nerve and  muscle  of my body is being made whole, pure and perfect.  My whole body is being restored to perfect health and harmony. Bring me to optimal mental and physical health.  Amen.
By not mentioning your particular problem you are inviting health into your life in all spheres of your life. If you mention the specific troubles, you are inviting these to come back into your life and bother you.
I hope that helps you to restore you to perfect health!
